Description
The spillway for Ashokan Reservoir drains into an unnamed stream which itself feeds into Esopus Creek over 3 miles downstream from the Ashokan Dam. Along this spillway are several falls and cascades which occur naturally along the unnamed tributary stream. When the spillway is open, the water exiting Ashokan Reservoir substantially augments the natural flow of the stream and creates a rather impressive series of falls and cascades, with the most substantial fall lying about 600 feet downstream of the bridge along Spillway Road.
This is a gorgeous waterfall that can be viewed from the bridge crossing Esopus Creek. The spillway is part of the Ashokan reservoir and is off limits with “No Trespassing” signs posted.
It is still worth a stop to view the fall, and the water is so clear that you can watch fish swimming from the bridge high above. There is a pull off after the bridge at the intersection of Beaverkill and Stone Church Road where you can park to take photos.
You could also probably park in the triangle between roads before the bridge if you aren’t staying long.
