Description
To be in the woods by first light after a nourishing evening's rain, is so invigorating, refreshing and rejuvenating!
Mineral Springs Falls, a name that comes from the nearest road (presumably named after some nearby mineral springs, although none are in evidence). It's an easy quarter-mile hike to the falls, which, like all cataracts, reach peak volume in spring with the melting of snow. In summer, the rushing torrent that feeds them quiets down to a gurgle, and the falls subside to a gentle, decorous cascade.
Also known as Green Falls because they may take their name from the one-day stubble of moss thast decorates most of the boulders in their path, and deepens the hush and darkness of the hemlock grove that forms their setting.
The scene is romantic. There are enough blasted trees and rotting stumps for several paintings by Ruisdael. The broad stream feeds the falls and the surrounding rocks, arranged in layers with a marked diagonal tilt, as though a giant fist had slammed down on the scene and bent it beyond repair.
