Description
Out of all the places that I was going to photograph while in Colorado, the Great Sand Dunes National Park was near, if not on top of my list! It did not disappoint. One usually does not think 'sand dunes' when Colorado is mentioned, but here it is in all its magnificent and alien glory!
We stayed overnight in the town of Del Norte so that we could photograph this landscape in the afternoon Golden Hour, and at sunrise the next morning.
We could not venture deep into the dunes as there was a "Red Flag Warning" both days for high winds. This in turn would have caused major camera shake since the dunes are so elevated and exposed. We decided to stay a bit lower in more sheltered areas on both occasions.
I stitched four images to produce this panoramic image of the Great Sand Dunes.
Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is in southern Colorado. It’s known for huge dunes like the towering Star Dune, and for the seasonal Medano Creek and beach created at the base of the dunes. The backcountry Medano Pass Primitive Road winds through a canyon toward the Sangre de Cristo mountains. Trails lead to forests, wetlands and alpine lakes like Medano Lake, which is home to trout and tundra wildlife.
