Description
As I mentioned in my earlier post about the Lower Falls, 'Yellowstone's legacy of fire and ice is magnificently manifested in the breathtaking Canyon area of the park.
Here volcanic activity and glaciation collaborated to form what (in my view), ranks among the wonders of the world!'
About 14,000 years ago the Wisconsin glacier, and subsequently its meltwaters, carved and eroded away the weakened rhyolite, leaving behind a 20-mile long gorge that varies from 800 to 1,200 deep and 1,500 to 4,000 feet wide, which we know today as the 'Grand Canyon 0f Yellowstone'.
The Yellowstone River courses through the canyon like a long braid of emerald jewelry draped across a gold- and bronze sculpture.
As we were walking back to the car from 'Lookout Point', a gentleman suggested that I stop and take a look at this view, needless to say- I'm so glad that I did!
